Things to do in and around Kalkan

LOCAL HISTORIC SITES

Kekova (The Sunken City) - take a boat trip out to the ancient city and enjoy swimming in its crystal waters

Salikent Gorge - go rafting through the beautiful Salikent canyon with a local guide

Visit Meis - a tiny Greek island off the coast of Kalkan with a pretty harbour, tavernas and shops, just a 30 minute boat trip away

Xanthos River - go canoeing for the day and get back to nature along the beautiful Xanthos River

Horse Riding - along the gorgeous 18 mile sands of Patara Beach and see the loggerhead turtle tracks left firsthand

PLACES TO VISIT

Kaputas Beach is just 5 minutes away from Kalkan along the Kas road. A natural sandy sheltered cove with beautiful turquoise blue water. Fabulous at sunset time. A real sun trap but with no fixed amenities. The beach is reached by stairs (about 180 steps) descending from the road.

Patara Beach in the heart of Lycia, is located around 15 minutes drive from Kalkan along the Fethiye road. It is best known for its beach, eighteen kilometres of soft white sands, backed by majestic dunes. The beach remains unspoilt by development and is closed at night to protect the resident Loggerhead turtles who make for the sand to lay their eggs. Taxis from Volume Travel or locally are about £10 per person return.

Kas is a pretty small market town around 25 minutes drive from Kalkan, there are amazing views during the journey there.

Fethiye Market - famous for its daily fish market, Fethiye is a larger town an hour from Kalkan. Choose your catch of choice and take it home to cook on the BBQ. It is a very popular well-known tourist centre and is especially popular with English visitors during the summer months.

RESTAURANTS & EATERIES

Kalkan is famous for its rooftop restaurants, we can personally recommend the following places to eat:

The Small House – need to book as the restaurant is very small but prepares delicious, traditional Turkish food

Olive Garden – always receives great reviews and has a stunning top floor dining area under a canopy

Mussaka – fantastic top-end seafront restaurant serving a range of cuisines

Aubergine – another seafront restaurant with lovely harbour views and an international menu

Gourmet – very close to the cottage and good

Kalamaki – very close to the cottage, lovely open terrace seating

Nur – very close to the cottage, good cocktails

Gironda – very close to the cottage, good range of Turkish cuisine

Korsan Fish Terrace - near front, excellent quality fish and great service

Lighthouse – on the end of the bay, great for breakfast

ISOS Kitchen – near the White House steps, traditional and very welcoming

Kleo Bar – on the sea front straight down the hill from Langton Cottage is the next best thing to a drinking hole away from the Langton Arms. Durali, the owner is a good friend and if you need local knowledge please ask him.

Hunckar Ockabasi - An excellent takeaway service, who deliver up to twelve o’clock at night. They serve all types of kebabs that will come with salad and bread, or lamb or beef casseroles. Beer and wine is also available. Very good value. Contact Mobile 009 05326371661 or 009 8442077. It is ideal for lunch before leaving for the airport, as food at the airports is very expensive.

BEACH CLUBS

If you don't want to spend all your days on the local pebble beach or drive to Kaputas or Patara, then there are also several beach clubs in Kalkan. Most are reached by a free boat from the harbour area (down by the Lighthouse Restaurant). They offer sun loungers, escape from the crowds in busy months, restaurants, some have rafts, flumes and slides for the kids and all have different views back towards Kalkan Harbour. You pay a small charge per head of between £5 and £10 which covers your sun lounger and the free return boat transport

Villa Mahal - the most sophisticated of the beach clubs, great restaurant, alongside one of Conde Nast's top Turkish hotels, a little bit of glamour

Coral Beach and Palm Beach - great fun for the kids with rafts and slides, both have restaurants

Indigo - only one accessed by walking down to the beach at the right hand edge of the harbour (you can just see the yellow parasols from the terrace at the cottage)

A great find

Langton Cottage was just perfect for us. Step out of the front door and within a few yards you are in the centre of this pretty town with its sophisticated mix of restaurants, bars, boutique shops and a couple of small supermarkets. But don't despair, back at the cottage, even on the roof terrace you can't hear a thing, no traffic, no music only the occasional call to prayer. Five minutes down the narrow streets you have the pretty beach and harbour with safe swimming so you don't miss a pool. It's best feature however is that large terrace giving you panoramic views of the above whilst still enjoying complete privacy. Kalkan enjoys a cliché clientele of a certain age group with no fast food joints or family entertainments which suits us just fine.

A hidden peaceful gem in the heart of the old town

Beautifully appointed house, location is second to none. Quality of the furnishings excellent and everything has been thought of! 5 minutes to the local beach and seconds away from the restaurants. The roof terrace gives you gorgeous views over the harbour and is very private. Having three bathrooms is a godsend with lots of girls in the house. You can spot turtles swimming in the bay if you're lucky or hop on a little boat over to many beach clubs for a different panoramic view. Turkish people very hospitable and helpful and you can spend as much or as little on food depending on what you like. Olive Garden is definitely worth a visit. We'll be back!

A real Turkish Delight

This really is a gem of a find. Nestled in the old town, along quite little lanes that twist and turn all the way down to the harbour front. Langton Cottage is a home from home, tastefully decorated, equipped with everything you need and things you didn't even know you needed. A spiral staircase weaves its way through the center of the house to the top and terrace where you are greeted with an unrivaled view of the sea, the beautiful coast line and the picturesque town nuzzled into the hillside. For such a central location it is surprisingly peaceful and with so many restaurants to suit every palette this really is a Turkish delight.

Beautiful, a real treat!

I stayed at this house in old town Kalkan for 4 nights in May with one of my oldest friends. It was a real treat. The house is beautiful, homely but immaculate, 5*, Roof terrace is pure bliss and everything has been thought of in terma of what you migth want whilst on holiday. It felt like I was a million miles from home in the charming town of Kalkan. It was warm but not too hot and I even swam in the sea.

For a long holiday or a short break I would recommend Langto Cottage to anyone.

Every little detail taken care of!

What a fantastic house. This was my second stay in Langton Cottage and the first for my travelling companion who was just as impressed as I was on first view, and even more so by the end of the stay. Everything that you could possibly need has been taken care of. The kitchen is better equipped than mine at home and there's even a second kitchen on the top floor to ensure the gin and tonic doesn't have too far to travel to the roof terrace. The position is perfect; literally two minutes to the nearest restaurant, but when you're in the house it feels very secluded. Both double bedrooms have an ensuite which was perfect for girls sharing. And the air conditioning is a life saver. All in all a great experience. 11 out of 10 from me!

The most beautiful villa with amazing views of the old harbour

The Langton cottage

The most beautiful Villa, with amazing views from the roof terrace overlooking the old harbour.

Situated in the old town of Kalkan, The Langton cottage is ideally situated with many bars and restaurant's close bye. We would recommend the Gourmet and the Kalamaki restaurant, but there are many more to choose from. The Villa is modern and spacious and very clean, and the furnishings are to a very high standard. Once you have visited the Langton cottage, it will be hard to find anything better. There is just not enough time to visit all the beach clubs, and also Potara beach that is situated a few miles down the coast.

All in all what a wonderful holiday

Thank you Barbra
